A vacuum takes the loose soil off the top. What stays is the fine grit that works its way down to the backing and cuts the fibres every time somebody walks on it, along with the oils and residues that make a carpet look flat and grey long before it is worn out.
We pre-treat, agitate and extract, which lifts what is actually in the pile rather than redistributing it. Marks and traffic lanes are treated individually before the main clean, because a general pass will not shift something that has had months to set.
Drying time matters as much as the clean. Over-wetting a carpet is how you get shrinkage, wicking marks and a smell — so we extract properly and, where needed, use air movers so the room is usable again quickly.
How we do it
Inspect and test
Fibre and backing checked, and a test in an out-of-the-way spot. Not every carpet takes the same treatment and wool in particular needs care.
Treat the marks first
Traffic lanes, spills and pet accidents pre-treated individually and given time to work before the main clean.
Extract and dry
Hot water extraction, thorough removal, and air movers where the room needs to be back in use quickly.

Questions
Carpet Cleaning — your questions answered
Will cleaning remove all the stains?
Most, but we will not promise all of them, and anyone who does is guessing. It depends on what caused the mark, how long it has been there and whether anything has already been tried on it. Fresh spills come out readily. Old ones, and anything that has been attacked with a supermarket spot remover, are harder — some of those products set the stain or bleach the fibre, and no amount of cleaning reverses that. We will tell you honestly what we think will lift before we start rather than after.
How long will the carpet take to dry?
Usually a few hours, and we can bring that right down with air movers where you need the room back quickly. The bigger point is that a carpet which takes a day or more to dry has been over-wetted, and that causes its own problems: shrinkage, marks wicking back up from the backing, and a lingering smell. Proper extraction is most of the job. We would rather spend longer extracting than leave you with a damp room.
Can you get rid of pet smells?
Often, yes, but it depends where the source is. If urine has gone through to the underlay or the floor beneath, cleaning the carpet alone will not fix it and anyone who says otherwise is selling you a temporary mask. We will find the extent of it and tell you whether it is a carpet job, an underlay job, or something that needs the floor treating. Where it is treatable we use products that break down the source rather than perfume over it.
Do I need to move the furniture?
It helps if the small things are cleared — lamps, side tables, anything breakable — but we will move the larger furniture as part of the job and put protectors under the feet while the carpet dries. Beds and heavy wardrobes we usually clean around unless you particularly want them shifted.
How often should carpets be cleaned?
For a family home, once a year keeps a carpet looking well and considerably extends its life, because what actually wears a carpet out is grit cutting the fibres rather than footfall itself. Offices and anywhere with heavy traffic want doing more often, and many of our commercial customers are on a schedule. Leaving it until a carpet looks dirty means the damage is already being done.
Do you clean commercial carpets and offices?
Yes, and we work outside office hours as standard so nobody is stepping over hoses during the working day. Large open-plan areas, stairs, and corridors are all routine work for us. For contract customers we schedule it in alongside the rest of the cleaning so it simply happens rather than needing to be organised each time.
“Thank you Ashton Cleaning for an excellent job, the carpets look excellent.”
